Let’s Play
FRISBEE
How To Play
The classic backyard toy has been the impetus for a game creation since it first began flying around the country. There is no one way to play with a Frisbee; rather, it's a tool for creating games that are only limited by one’s imagination.
History
While flying discs date back to ancient Greece, most notably with the statue of Discobolus, and there are remnants of clay discs that Native Americans may have used for recreation, the origin of the Frisbee itself has a variety of origin stories.
A common one begins in the 1870’s with a baker named William Russel Frisbie. Frisbie created the Bridgeport Frisbie Pie Co. which used pie tins with the words “Frisbie’s Pies” imprinted on the bottom. The pie tins became a popular recreation item at Yale University in the 1940’s where they would play catch with them yelling “Frisbie.”
In the 1950’s UFOs were all the rage in the united states and Walter Frederick Morrison had created a “flying saucer” to play catch with. Morrison had the first molded plastic discs made and he and his partners sold the discs and fairs around the country where they would actively flip the discs showing potential customers what could be done with the plastic discs.
Morrison sold the rights to Frisbee to WHAM-O who already had a line of outdoor toys. WHAM-O officially launched the toy Frisbee in 1957, and the disc has been soaring ever since. Frisbee’s can now be found in all shapes and sizes and have inspired a plethora of games and sports.
